56 AMXS defeats 56 LRS, advance to playoffs
LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Arizona --
The 56th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron basketball team battled the 56th Logistics Readiness Squadron basketball team during an intramural basketball game August 3 at the Luke Air Force Base Bryant Fitness Center. AMXS prevailed 48-42.
The tip-off marked the start of a competitive game for both teams. LRS and AMXS battled back and forth, playing high tempo basketball with no signs of slowing down. Eventually, AMXS took the lead with a score of 23-21 with two minutes left in the first. LRS played defense and was able to force ANXSturnovers. AMXS held their lead, ending the first half with the score 26-21.
With LRS trailing by five, AMXS was aiming to win and earn a playoff spot.
Quinten Herring, 56th AMXS teammate, took some time to speak about his team's performance at halftime.
"Our main focus in the game was to get the team more involved," he said. "We stayed focused the whole first half and were able to get good ball movement. If we keep doing that, the game is ours to win."
AMXS worked as a team and continued their lead, scoring nine unanswered points during the first five minutes of the second half, making the score to 35-22. LRS wasn't going down without a fight as they also scored nine unanswered points to bring the score to 31-36 with eight minutes left. AMXS shot selection was off and their shots were not falling, which LRS took advantage of. With the AMXS's mishaps, LRS was able to cut the lead to three with the score of 45-42 with 27 seconds left. LRS was determined to regain the lead, but AMXS played well and was able to hold the ball getting fouled then sinking the free throws to increase the lead. With time expiring, AMXS was victorious and secured their spot in the playoffs.
"We just need to keep doing what we've been doing this whole season," said Logan Ivey, 56th AMXS teammate. "We also need all of our players to show up. Fresh bodies will definitely help us out in the playoffs. "
