The Peoria Police Department recognized a Luke Air Force Base Airman April 1 for rendering aid to a community member in Peoria recently.

In the early morning of March 7, a 35-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle as she returned home after a morning walk.

Shortly after the incident, Airman 1st Class Luke Notman, 308th Aircraft Maintenance Unit assistant dedicated crew chief, arrived at the scene and took immediate action to render aid to the woman.

"I was shocked at first when I saw the incident," Airman Notman said.

The Airman said he knew he needed to act to prevent the woman from getting hit again by another motorist.

"I began using the Self Aid Buddy Care training I received in basic training," Airman Notman said.

He then performed CPR and called 911. Unfortunately the woman's injuries proved too severe and she died at the scene.

Regardless of the end result, Capt. Adrian Oliver, 308th AMU officer in charge, said he was impressed with Airman Notman.

"I'm not surprised that he tried to help the woman," he said. "He is always putting others before himself. This is just one small testament of his core values and morals."

The Peoria chief of police said it was an honor and privilege to recognize an Airman who has not only shown commitment to his country, but has shown an extreme commitment to the Peoria community.

"The city of Peoria would like to express our gratitude to Airman Notman," said Police Chief Roy Mentor, Peoria Police Department, who presented the 27-year-old with a coin at his unit roll call. "His selfless act of attempting to help the woman is an excellent example of one placing others before himself."
