Lady Falcons bring home gold Published Oct. 3, 2008 By Staff Sgt. SAURENA PAULSON 56th Services Squadron LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- The Lady Falcon's varsity softball team's season came to a victorious end Thursday night. Ranked third with a season record of nine wins and four losses, they were looking to end the season well and came out swinging at the end-of-season Peoria Adult Women's Varsity Baseball League tournament. The first game of the night was against sixth-ranked opponent, Girls Night Out. With solid base hits from everyone and tough defense, the Lady Falcons prevailed 12-6. The next opponent was the second-ranked team WFC, who had been beaten by the Lady Falcons the week prior to the season tournament. "It's always a battle with this team," said Shawnee Larsen, Lady Falcon pitcher. "We have been playing each other for years, so we know each other pretty well." After a few slow innings struggling to get runners on base, the Falcons found their sticks and saw their efforts begin to pay off. With a strong inning lead by Jeanine Diaz, the Lady Falcons took the lead going into the last inning. The Lady Falcons were able to stop WFC from scoring and secured the win. After a hard-fought battle with WFC, the Lady Falcons had one more game to play to secure the championship. They would have to go through fourth-ranked Old School. The battle between these two teams in the regular season left each team with one win and one loss. The Lady Falcons wasted no time in showing why they were in the championship game scoring eight runs in the first inning. However, Old School did not go down without a fight. They came out in the first inning chipping away at the eight-point lead and finishing the inning with three runs. The Lady Falcons added another three runs in the third while the defense was immaculate keeping Old School scoreless through the final four innings. Fired up by their great defense, the Lady Falcons were not satisfied with their lead knowing that this team was capable of a come back at any time. Scoring seven more runs in the final inning, the Lady Falcons secured the victory and title of tournament champions. For women interested in playing for the Luke Lady Falcons, call (623) 856-7800.
