CFC contributions benefit Luke, community Published Nov. 7, 2006 By Lt. Col. Joseph Weaver 56th Medical Support Squadron LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- The Combined Federal Campaign begins at Luke Sept. 7 and ends Oct. 13. Along with the Air Force Assistance Fund, the CFC is the only federally mandated yearly fund raising event. There are approximately 28,000 federal employees in Maricopa County eligible to donate of which, Luke makes up 30 percent. "The CFC is an excellent opportunity for Air Force members to financially support nonprofit organizations in the local community and nationwide," said Brig. Gen. Tom Jones, 56th Fighter Wing commander. "There are more than 500 agencies in the CFC booklet. These agencies are so diverse that there is bound to be a cause that each member believes in." Contributions are not limited to active-duty members but can also be made by civilian, contract employees and retirees as well. "In our busy lives, it is sometimes easy to overlook simple things such as our health, housing, and food," said Col. Debra Jattar, CFC co-project officer. "Looking through the CFC booklet is a reminder that there are less fortunate people who can use our help." In 2005, Maricopa County raised more than $1.6 million dollars for CFC agencies, with Luke contributing over $280,000. That fundraising effort showed the generosity of Luke Thunderbolts, which, among other things, helped address the enormous needs caused by Hurricane Katrina. Contributing by way of payroll deduction or a one-time donation are two ways individuals can help. No donation is too small. Members are encouraged to contact their squadron representative for more information. This year each member is encouraged to take a few minutes to look through the CFC booklet and consider donating. The CFC kick-off breakfast is 7:30 a.m. Sept. 7 at the Desert Star Club and is open to the Luke community.
