62nd AMU makes way for F-35

LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. --  The 62nd Aircraft Maintenance Unit moved to building 495 July 14 to provide space for the F-35 project.

Chief Master Sgt. Jeffery Ewing, 62nd AMU superintendant, said that it was an important move.

"As the F-35 jets transition here to Luke, we needed to get out of that building so we can start to build the new squadron there."

There were approximately 200 members in the unit that helped move. The unit remodeled the new building before transporting more than 2,000 pieces of equipment that weighed up to 100,000 pounds.

Tech. Sgt. Vincent Metcalf, 62nd AMU programs manager, said that the move was a challenging learning experience.

"Even though we are losing the convenience of having our aircraft right next to us, I believe that the change is good because it can help renew a person's focus," he said.

Senior Airman Christopher Pizzitola, 62nd AMU crew chief, said the move will make the AMU more effective.

"It helps us streamline our processes because we are more centralized as far as being closer to our commander, first sergeant and the rest of the active-duty wing," he said. "Our new facility also makes us closer to other necessities such as the fuel barn and the rest of the wing which allows for more team work with other units."

Ewing said he is appreciative of all the Airmen coming together to make the move successful.

"All of the work they put into the move was incredible and their teamwork was unbelievable," he said. "They came in and got right to work; I applaud everyone who helped out in the move."
