Nine children from the Luke Air Force Base youth center visited Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs Oct. 13 at the Glendale City Hall.

Children from the youth center came up with the idea to take a field trip to visit Scruggs during an art project they were working on.

"The children are currently building a shoe box city," said Linda Bishop, 56th Force Support Squadron youth center program assistant. "One of the children in the program wanted to be the mayor of the city and asked if she and the other children involved in building their city could meet the mayor of Glendale."

This is a field trip for the oldest children, ages 8 to 12, enrolled in the youth centers fall break camp.

The children went to city hall to learn what Scruggs' duties are and see where she works. They met her at her office and were given the opportunity to ask questions.
She elaborated on things like her job, community interests, volunteer work, school and Luke.

They also showed Scruggs the shoe box buildings they had made, and presented her with handmade gifts and cards.

"My favorite part of the trip was getting to see her office," said Malia Gonzales, 10, daughter of Tech. Sgt. Ryan Gonzales, 56th Medical Support Squadron magnetic resonance imaging NCO-in-charge.

The children all agreed they enjoyed the field trip and learned a lot about the role and responsibly of a mayor.
