Monsoon storm slams golf course Published July 25, 2011 By Stephen Delgado 56th Fighter Wing Public Affairs LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- A fierce storm ripped through the Falcon Dunes Golf Course late July 11 causing damage. "There was extensive damage to the trees on the golf course," said Grady Lester, Falcon Dunes Golf Course assistant superintendent of maintenance. "Nearly 70 trees were completely blown over and a total loss. There were an additional 35 trees that had damage from broken limbs to severe damage such as one fourth to two thirds of the trees being broken off." Falcon Dunes Golf Course isn't a stranger to severe storms, but this storm was the worst as far as tree damage, according to Lester. "We lost 55 trees in a wind storm in 2009 and have been flooded twice, most recently in 2010," he said. "Dust storms and rain are common during the monsoon season, but usually there is minor damage with these storms. Microbursts that produce winds strong enough to topple trees are uncommon." The golf course was undergoing a period of maintenance, so this storm added more challenges for maintenance personnel. Even though the golf course was closed for heavy maintenance July 12 and 13, this storm added to the burden, Lester said. He had profound praise for the golf course staff and how they responded to this crisis. "My personnel have been working very hard to clean up and remove trees that obstructed play," Lester said. "It is a lengthy process and hard physical labor. I appreciate our patrons having patience as we complete the cleanup process. I am confident in, and proud of, the people who work with me." The Falcon Dunes Golf Course is open from 6 a.m. to sundown seven days a week. For more information callĀ (623) 856-8862.
