Historically the Luke Air Force Base veterinary clinic's main function was providing vaccinations for pets of base personnel, but there are big changes happening at the clinic that are leading to a major expansion of services.

The vet clinic now offers sick call, various tests and treatments, in addition to wellness services, such as vaccinations, that were offered in the past, according to Dr. Rebecca Benisch, Luke AFB veterinary services chief.

"The new services include blood work to check kidney and liver function, as well as Valley Fever, Tick Fever and thyroid screening," Dr. Benisch said. "We can also diagnose and treat ear infections, skin infections, skin diseases and other minor illnesses. However, we still do not have radiology, surgery or emergency capabilities for privately owned animals."

The Luke clinic offers a plethora of vaccinations for rabies, distemper/parvo, lepto and bordetella for dogs, and rabies and feline leukemia for cats, according to Dr. Benisch.
"We also have annual heartworm tests for dogs and cats and microchipping is available," she said.

A wellness clinic was offered by the clinic in May, and another one is in the works for early autumn.

"We had 30 animals show up for the May clinic," Dr. Benisch said. "The turnout was pleasing to us. We are looking at having another one in October. Additionally, we will offer microchipping at the Pet Palooza scheduled for November."

The Luke veterinary clinic, as well as all veterinary clinics in the military, is run by the Army, as they are the Defense Department executors for all the service branches, according to Dr. Benisch.

The veterinary clinic is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday with a one-hour break from 12 to 1 p.m. for lunch and is located in Bldg. 1107. Fridays are open for over-the-counter sales.
