The 56th Medical Group recently created the Family Health Initiative, which promotes a team approach to meeting the healthcare needs of Luke Air Force Base members by improving continuity.

According to Maj. Joyce Beaty, 56th Medical Group group practice manager, better continuity means better medical management.

"One of the primary goals of FHI is for our patients to be cared for by the same technician, nurse, provider and family health team each time they visit the clinic," she said. "All of your medical needs will be met by your FHI team so you don't have to worry about seeing a different provider every time you visit the clinic."

As far as accessing patient care, Major Beaty said there haven't been any changes.
"Patients need to either call (623) 856-2273 or visit www.tricareonline.com to make appointments," she said. "Active-duty personnel are encouraged to call during the 'active-duty only' window from 6:30 to 7 a.m. for priority appointments."

Active-duty personnel will be seen for all urgent care appointments within 24 hours of their request, Major Beaty said.

"If there aren't any appointments available for nonactive-duty patients, they will be given the option to visit an urgent care center off-base," she said. "If they choose to wait longer, they will be scheduled and seen within seven days."

As far as quarters, first line supervisors can give active-duty members the day off without a medical appointment, said Lt. Col. Lisa Wakefield, 56th Medical Operations Squadron group practice manager.

"Supervisors should grant 24-hour quarters to their troops, instead of making them schedule an appointment, especially if they just have a cold that needs to run its course with some rest," Colonel Wakefield said. "If supervisors took advantage of this, more appointments would be open for people who really need them."
