Chapel gives to Haiti Published Feb. 5, 2010 By 2nd Lt. Ryan DeCamp 56th Fighter Wing Public Affairs LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- The Protestant Community of the 56th Fighter Wing base chapel raised more than $4,200 to help with relief efforts in Haiti. The funds came from the community donating the tithes and offerings from their Sunday services on Jan. 24. "The monies will be used by World Help, a Christian missionary group, to provide for several projects in Haiti," said Chaplain (Capt.) Carlos Brito, 56th Fighter Wing Protestant chaplain. "These include shipping a container with food, water and medicine to the country. The offering will also go directly to help with the rebuilding process." A magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit the country Jan. 12. According to World Health Organization statistics from Jan. 26, the quake has taken more than 111,000 lives and injured 200,000 more. A million Haitians are also homeless. The number of orphans has multiplied by more than two-and-a-half as the estimated number is now up at one million. Haiti's population before the quake was 9.5 million. Chaplain Brito says the funds will buy items for the cleanup such as shovels, picks, saws and boots. He says Luke's Catholic Community will donate their tithes and offerings from the Feb. 13 and 14 services to the Catholic Relief Service to help with the efforts in Haiti.
