Representatives from Luke Air Force Base, including Brig. Gen. Kurt Neubauer, 56th Fighter Wing commander; Chief Master Sgt. Randy Raper, 56th FW command chief; and the base honor guard took part in the memorial ceremony of retired Air Force Col. Jack Bomar at the Melcher Mortuary Mission Chapel and Crematory June 10 in Mesa.

Col. Bomar was shot down Feb. 4, 1967 in Southeast Asia and was held as a prisoner of war for more than six years. During that time, he spent eight months of solitary confinement in one of several camps in Hoa Lo Prison, commonly referred to by American prisoners as the Hanoi Hilton. There, he communicated with Navy pilot John McCain, who was imprisoned in the next cell.
