After several months of construction and waiting, Luke Air Force Base Airmen have begun moving into the newly-completed Bldg. 586 dormitory near Mustang Street and Bong Lane.

The $19.3 million project that spanned 16 months will house 108 junior enlisted Airmen.

"This is a much-anticipated day for the Airmen of Luke," said Master Sgt. Jason Ford, 56th Civil Engineer Squadron superintendent of unaccompanied housing.

The floor plan is very different than Luke's 12 existing dormitories and the layout provides Airmen their own room and several other features.

"The new dorm uses the 'Dorms-4-Airmen' design concept," Sergeant Ford said. "Each room has its own bathroom that includes a bathtub and shower combo. There is also a walk-in closet, full-size bed, and other furnishings to round out the room. Each suite has a common area shared by four residents. The common area includes a washer and dryer, galley-style kitchen with a stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, a kitchenette area with a table, chairs, breakfast bar and stools."

According to Sergeant Ford, the dormitory was built for several reasons. The building will increase the quality of life at Luke while replacing an older, previously-demolished dormitory. It also highlights the new unaccompanied housing standards being built throughout the Air Force.

"The off-duty quality of life for our younger Airmen is a key ingredient in assisting them in performing and accomplishing the mission," Sergeant Ford said. "This new dorm reinforces that the Air Force is listening to the desires of our next generation of warfighters and doing everything they can to ensure our success by taking care of those who will become our successors."

Luke's current dormitories have seen a myriad of upgrades over the last year too.

Over $3.5 million was invested in 27 dormitory projects that included everything from new day rooms, dorm furnishings and enhancements to major roofing, keyless entry, and basketball court renovation projects, Sergeant Ford added.

"We asked for a lot last year to increase the quality of life of the residents in the Luke dorm complex, and the Air Force delivered," Sergeant Ford said. "This year we will continue to find ways to enhance the Luke dormitories for generations to come."
