The 56th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, with the help of strong winds, defeated the 56th Medical Group March 26 during an intramural flag football game here.

As the teams took the field the wind began to blow, making it hard for either team to score.

"Both teams had to focus on their short game," said Brent Cornett, 56th Force Support Squadron Fitness Center assistant sports director. "The wind made a big difference during the game."

The first half of the game started like any other, but what made this game different was the strong and sporadic crosswinds.

After the first attempt by AMXS to throw a long pass into the end zone was fouled by the wind, both teams began to attempt a short game. Not only did both teams struggle against the wind, but against good defense.

The first half nearly ended without either team scoring but in the last seconds Lance Martin, AMXS coach, threw a long Hail Mary into the end zone. The wind died down just long enough for Rodolfo Perez, 56th AMXS, to catch the ball and score at the buzzer, ending the first half.

The second half started much like the first with strong wind, tough defense and neither team scoring. AMXS again broke the cycle with a breakaway play running the ball into the end zone. That launched AMXS into a scoring streak, scoring three times in the last few minutes of the game ending it 24-0.

"I was very pleased with my team's performance," Martin said. "We went into the game with a tough challenge from both the MDG and the wind but we came out with a victory."
