AFAF seeks donations Published Feb. 12, 2009 LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- The 2009 Air Force Assistance Fund is currently seeking donations for this year's Caring for Our Own campaign. The drive is going on through March 13 and Luke Air Force Base members are asked to donate to the fund which benefits Air Force active duty, Reserve, Guard, retired, and surviving spouses and families. According to Maj. John Meiter, 61st Fighter Squadron instructor pilot and AFAF installation project officer, Luke's 2009 goal is set for just under $78,000. "Unfortunately, we have seen a steady decline in the Luke participation and donation amounts over the past three years," Major Meiter said. "We would like to reverse that trend and see Luke donate more money than ever before. With the help and generosity of the Luke family, we can easily exceed our goal." The four charities that comprise the AFAF are: Air Force Aid Society, the official charity of the Air Force, www.afas.org; The General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, www.lemay-foundation.org; Air Force Enlisted Village Indigent Widows' Fund, www.afenlistedwidows.org; and the Air Force Villages Indigent Widows' Fund, www.airforcevillages.com. "The Air Force Assistance Fund is an important part of helping out members of the Air Force family who are in need of financial assistance," Major Meiter said. "Last year, Luke Airmen and their families who were in need of financial assistance received almost $380,000 in loans, grants and community enhancements from the AF Aid Society." Active-duty and retired members can contribute through the Payroll Deduction Plan or by cash, check or money order. Nonmilitary civilians may contribute by cash or check.
