Luke Falcons varsity baseball hosted the 2008 Air Force Varsity Baseball Bash Tournament Sept. 25 through 28 at Millennium High School in Goodyear.

Teams from Andrews Air Force Base, Md., Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., Altus AFB, Okla., and Tinker AFB, Okla., joined Luke in the tournament.

"We were very excited to have the opportunity to host this year's tournament," said Kevin Bruaw, 56th Services Squadron assistant sports director. "With the help of Millennium High School, the tournament was a success."

In their first game during the round robin to determine placement in the tournament, the Luke Falcons swooped down and destroyed Altus winning 17-3.

Continuing in this manner, Luke dominated all the teams in the round robin, winning before the games got to the fourth inning.

As tournament play started Saturday, the Luke Falcons were in the number one seed, with Davis-Monthan ranked second.

The Falcons went undefeated into the championship game against Davis-Monthan, who had lost earlier in the tournament to the Luke Falcons.

By the second inning of the game, DM and the Luke Falcons were tied 2-2, which held until the fifth inning when the Luke Falcons scored three more runs to take the lead.

With the Luke Falcons ahead, DM tried to score with their batters hitting well, but the Falcons played better. The balls seemed to fall into the Luke Falcons' gloves making the remaining innings pass quickly.

In the final inning the Luke Falcons increased the lead by one and went on to win 6-2.
"The competition was top notch the entire tournament," Mr. Bruaw said. "Every team gave 100 percent. Luke was definitely the best offensive team out there. They had great presence of mind on the base paths and came up with key stolen bases."
