Luke Thunderbolts have until Nov. 4 to give to charity via the Combined Federal Campaign.

Along with the Air Force Assistance Fund, the CFC is a federally mandated fundraising event that happens each year.

With more than 2,500 approved charities in the 2008 CFC charity list booklet, federal employees have many agencies to which they can designate their donation.

"I've contributed to four different organizations including the American Red Cross and several youth organizations to help others in need," said Airman 1st Class Tilla De Santiago, 56th Logistic Readiness Squadron supply journeyman. "I am donating to those charities because if I ever need help, I would hope that someone would donate to me."

The numbers compared to same time last year are a little off, according to Maj. Ellis Kinzer, 425th Fighter Squadron Weapons Systems Officer and CFC project officer.

"We are at around 77 percent of the amount contributed last year, but this may be attributed to the economy and the 12 percent decrease in base population," he said.

To help match last year's numbers, some maintenance units will be doing a unit fundraiser at the Phoenix International Raceway and others will host internal competitions to raise money with the highest contributor receiving an award, Major Kinzer said.

With each unit having a set goal of 30 percent participation and 100 percent contact from their CFC representative, Major Kinzer is confident Luke will hit its goal this year.

"Our goal is $289,000 and I think we'll reach it," Major Kinzer said. "Thunderbolts realize these are hard times, but we are all quite fortunate to have a steady and reliable income. We should consider that when we donate to the charities."

Those who pay income tax to Arizona have an extra incentive to donate.

"Luke could double its goal if members and their spouse pay the Arizona income tax and donate to a local charity," Major Kinzer said. "They could receive up to $400 tax refund on their next year's tax return."

Individuals can contribute to the CFC via automatic payroll deduction or a one-time donation.
