Combined Federal Campaign Kick-off Published Sept. 19, 2008 LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- The Combined Federal Campaign, the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, begins Sept. 24 and runs until election day, Nov. 4. Along with the Air Force Assistance Fund, the CFC is one of two federally mandated fundraising events each year. There are approximately 28,000 federal employees in Maricopa County eligible to donate and Luke makes up 30 percent of eligible employees. "The CFC is an excellent opportunity for Air Force members to financially support non-profit organizations in our local, national and international communities," said Col. Kurt Neubauer, 56th Fighter Wing commander. "There are more than 2,500 federal employee approved charities on the 2008 CFC charity list. These agencies are so diverse that there is bound to be a cause that each member believes in." According to Maj. Ellis Kinzer, 425th Fighter Squadron assistant director of operations and CFC project officer, this year may be a tougher economic period, which only means that the CFC charities are in even greater need. "In our busy lives, it is sometimes easy to overlook simple things such as the needs of others for health, housing and food," Major Kinzer said. "Looking through the CFC booklet is a reminder that there are less fortunate people who can use our help. Contributions are not limited to active-duty members but can also be made by civilian, contract workers and retirees as well. Individuals can contribute via automatic payroll deduction or a one-time donation. No donation is too large or small." In 2007, Maricopa County raised more than $1.689 million for CFC agencies across the county, with Luke contributing over $289,000. Each member is encouraged to take a few minutes to look through the CFC booklet and consider donating. According to Major Kinzer, each unit has at least one representative who will be distributing booklets and donation forms to their squadrons after the kick-off celebration on Sept. 24. "Let's show the public that Luke Thunderbolts not only care about our base but our surrounding community as well," Major Kinzer said. The fundraising goal for Luke this year is $230,000. The CFC kick-off breakfast is 7:30 a.m. Sept. 24 at the Desert Star Club. Two breakfast options will be served -- a fruit tray is $6.50 for non-members and $4.50 for members and an egg and sausage breakfast is $10.80 for non-members and $8.80 for members. Group and squadron commanders, supervisors, key workers and anyone interested in learning more about the CFC are welcome to attend. R.S.V.P. to your squadron representative by Sept. 22.
