As the year winds down, tax season marches closer. The Luke tax center is gearing up and will begin seeing customers on a walk-in basis mid-January.

The Internal Revenue Service sponsors the Volunteer Income Tax Association Program, which trains volunteers to assist the members of Luke community in tax preparation. These services are free.

Each year Thunderbolts volunteer their time to help others. Sixty people have volunteered to provide tax assistance this year and will receive 25 hours of in-class training.

"The volunteers are well trained and eager to help," said Capt. Brock Ohlson, 56th Fighter Wing Staff Judge Advocate and acting tax center director.

In 2006, volunteers processed 3,550 federal and 3,279 state returns, totaling more than $5 million in refunds, for which they won the IRS No.1 regional VITA award.

The Luke tax center is located in Bldg. 1150, Room 1010.
