TEMPE, Ariz. -- U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. David Berkland, 56th Fighter Wing commander, spoke to over 200 guests at Arizona State University’s Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Detachment 025 dining out, highlighting the critical role every Air Force Specialty Code plays in mission success.

Sharing a personal account from his deployment to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, Berkland described a 12-hour enemy attack that tested every facet of base operations. As aircrews worked to launch aircraft, defenders secured the perimeter, communications Airmen kept essential systems operational, logisticians sustained vital supply lines, medics treated the wounded, and force support personnel ensured continuity of operations.

“It takes every AFSC, every Airman, to get the mission done,” Berkland said. “Victory doesn’t rest on a single career field—it’s a total team effort.”

Berkland also spoke about the role of commanders, emphasizing that their core responsibilities are to organize, train, and equip their people. He noted that leadership inherently involves accepting risk, making decisions to keep the mission moving forward, and trusting the teams they lead.

“Commanders must be willing to assume risk so our Airmen can accomplish the mission without hesitation,” Berkland said.

The event celebrated Detachment 025’s achievements and honored cadets preparing to commission into the U.S. Air Force. Cadets, family members, and alumni attended the evening, which included military traditions, mentorship, and recognition of future leaders.

Berkland’s message reinforced the enduring importance of teamwork, leadership, and readiness—the same values that define the 56th Fighter Wing at Luke AFB.
