The Luke Air Force Base Community Center, Bldg. 700, where the 56th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Wellness Center resides, is being renovated and will include a name change to Community Commons.

"The building is getting a total overhaul from top to bottom," said Jim Shaw, 56th Force Support Squadron chief of community services. "The new building will include HVAC systems, infrastructure, interior renovations, reconfiguring of spaces and even an elevator."

New spaces will be created for Airmen to give them a home away from home feeling.

"There will be a learning resource center, an Airman's lounge with a built-in barbecue, and quiet areas for Airmen to use for studying," Shaw said. "We're focusing on the Airmen. Right now there's not really a place for them to get together and relax. The learning resource center will be very conducive to Airmen's studies as well."

The first floor, once renovated, will be a place for Airmen to get together. The second floor will focus more on fitness.

During the renovations, Subway will remain open but will also be renovated.

"The dining area will be upgraded with new furnishings, and there will also be a little coffee shop put in which will most likely share the dining area with Subway," said Robert Wirt, 56th FSS deputy commander. "All of these renovations are to improve resiliency, promote wellness and establish community for Airmen on base."

The renovations are expected to be completed by May 2016.

"The renovations are long overdue," Shaw said. "Once they're done, Community Commons will become the jewel of Luke."
