Luke Air Force Base's varsity basketball team was practicing March 5 at the Luke Air Force Base Bryant Fitness Center to maintain a 6-0 record.

"This team practices well but listens better during game situations and knows how to execute to win the game," said Montey Smith, varsity basketball coach. "Even though there are no superstars, they play well with good camaraderie."

Before players get together to begin practicing, some of the varsity players arrive early and typically run some laps and start working on drills -- a warm-up before the warm-up.

"Once practice begins, the routine consists of stretching, doing layups and shots," Smith said. "After the warm-up is completed, the team begins to work on improving weaknesses."

Coach Smith has the team run three-on-twos or two-on-ones to focus on running faster breaks. He also incorporates suicide free throws to encourage his team not to miss. During a suicide free throw drill, for every shot a player misses, the team must run a suicide at the end of practice. However, if a player misses a free throw the next player has a chance to redeem his teammate by making his free throw.

The amount of training and time the team has put into practice has resulted in a 6-0 performance so far in this season.

"Out of the nine military teams, Nellis AFB, Nevada, is the next opponent," Smith said. "With six games left, we are in first place and plan on staying there."
