Airmen and NCOs got to experience what it's like to be a chief master sergeant Jan. 6 when they shadowed a chief here during the View from the Top program.

View from the Top is a new monthly program at Luke Air Force Base that provides an opportunity for Airmen to gain insight about senior leadership roles in the mission at Luke. It also gives them a chance to see the decision-making process chiefs use on a daily basis.

"It presents an amazing chance to see a broader view of the Air Force," said Airman 1st Class Dylan Vogel, 56th Medical Operations Squadron medical technician. "It also provides chiefs an opportunity to be a direct mentor."

The day began with a group physical training session in the morning. Then, Airmen and NCOs followed a chief on their normal routine. They got to see firsthand what the leadership's mindset is when making important decisions and were also introduced to Air Force operational management.

"It felt great to be selected," said Senior Airman Scott Giles, 56th Comptroller Squadron customer service technician. "It was a humbling experience, and it was great to see the real side of a chief."

Giles shadowed Chief Master Sgt. John Craft, 56th Maintenance Group superintendent. One of the things that stood out to Giles was the financial decisions that leaders in the MXG make.

"It was amazing to see how the maintenance group runs production," Giles said. "Coming from a financial background, it was also interesting to see how the 56th Maintenance Group runs from the financial perspective."

Airmen and NCOS were selected through a nomination process based on achievements, awards and personal background. View from the Top is open to ranks E-1 to E-6. Airmen and NCOs interested in applying can call (623) 856-9741.
