First generation Marine has passion for sport

LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. --  When military personnel take the oath to serve their country, they enlist to serve a purpose greater than themselves.

The military life is a selfless journey, but there are times one must make room in the schedule to enjoy the smaller things in life.

Marine Corps Cpl. Mauricio Sandoval, Bulk Fuel Company Charlie administrative NCO in charge was born in Chile and came to the United States when he was 13.

"I'm the first person in my family to join the military," Sandoval said. "When I walked into the Armed Forces Career Center, I didn't have a set choice of what branch to join. I chose the Marine Corps because they share a family like bond."

One of Sandoval's hobbies when he isn't spending time with his family is soccer.

"Soccer has been in my life since I was a kid living in Chile," Sandoval said. "Now it has become a tradition on both sides of my family."

Even though Sandoval is in the Marine Corps and takes care of his family, his wife, Paola and his daughters, Kamilah, 2, and Yaretzy, 1, he still finds time to pursue his passion.

Sandoval said he usually practices at night and tries not to miss any games. His family is very soccer-oriented so they encourage him to do his best.

Sandoval joined the Chivas USA team in California when he was a teen and now plays for Luke.

"Our team is competing in the all-Air Force soccer tournament Aug. 27 through Sept. 2 in San Antonio," he said. "This will be my third time traveling with the Luke team, but I hope this will be the year we take home the championship trophy."
