Derek Smith of the 56th Logistics squadron, at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., and more than 20 other Airmen hand out donated school supplies, athletic equipment and toys to Filipino children from the Duyan Ni Maria orphanage as part of a volunteer community relations event here April 24-25. United States and the Republic of the Philippine military forces will are participating in Balakatan 2009, an annual joint bilateral exercise designed to improve United States and the Republic of the Philippines combined planning, combat readiness and interoperability for a wide range of operations, from humanitarian assistance to peacekeeping missions throughout the region.
