Whether it's a clogged sink to talk about or planning an outing, dorm council Airmen meet once a month to voice concerns, brainstorm ideas on ways to improve dorm life and plan activities to boost morale.

"The council is made up of dorm dwellers," said Airman 1st Class Kristin Coreil, 56th Medical Group medical logistician. "Our primary goal is to make sure Airmen in the dorms are well and have their issues taken care of."

Once an issue or problem is brought up, the dorm committee takes the information through the right channels, Coreil said. It's easier to get dorm issues resolved because first sergeants and dorm management attend the meetings.

"It is important for dorm management to attend the meetings because some Airmen are keener to get out their issues when it's in a group environment," said Staff Sgt. Jaime Barboza, 56th Civil Engineer Squadron. "With us being a part of the meeting, we hear and see issues that otherwise might not have been heard. Most importantly, we are here to help the Airmen and attend to their needs."

Although many may not know the dorm council exists, it is a critical part of dorm life.

"It's important to have a dorm council because not all Airmen are comfortable speaking up for themselves or have time to inform others about what problems they may be having in the dorms," said Senior Airman Nesha Richard, 56th MDG dental technician. "The meeting gives all attendees a chance to bring up problems without feeling uncomfortable."

The council also plans fun events in addition to ensuring a positive dorm environment.

"Since not all Airmen are of drinking age, we like to plan events that everyone can enjoy," Richard said. "Last summer we threw a big barbecue. There was food, music, slip'n'slides, water balloons and more."

Committee members must think of creative ways to raise money to fund the events.

"We are currently planning a powder puff football game as well as a 5k run," Richard said. "Once the events are planned, everyone is welcome to come."

Anyone living in the dorms is encouraged to attend future dorm council meetings.

"We meet at 3 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at McViper's in Bldg. 700," Coreil said. "Please come and share your ideas to help us serve the dorm residents."
