Colonel NICHOLAS R. IHDE

Col Nicholas Ihde is the Commander, 56th Fighter Wing, Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. The wing’s mission is to train the world’s greatest fighter pilots and combat-ready Airmen. As part of Air Combat Command, and home to 27 squadrons with F-35A Lightning II and F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, the 56th Fighter Wing is the largest fighter wing in the U.S. Air Force with more than $11 billion in aircraft and 7,000 total force personnel. The wing graduates more than 200 F-35A pilots and 270 air control professionals annually. The 56th Fighter Wing also supports flying operations based at Klamath Falls, Oregon. Additionally, the 56th Fighter Wing manages the Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field and the Barry M. Goldwater Range, a military training range spanning more than 1 million acres of the Sonoran Desert.

 

Col Ihde received his commission from the University of Florida through ROTC in 2002. He earned his wings in 2003 at Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi. He is a command pilot with more than 2,200 hours, primarily in the F-16 and F-35A. He served as an F-35A and F-16 evaluator, instructor, weapons officer, and operational test pilot.  He has multiple combat tours in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, with more than 270 combat hours. Prior to his current assignment, Col Ihde was the 85th Fighter Group commander at Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Fort Smith, Arkansas where he oversaw the training of eight Foreign Military Sales F-35 countries in the largest pilot training center of its kind.
