May Fitness Month: Competitors 'bring it' in myriad events Published April 20, 2012 By Senior Airman CJ Hatch 56th Fighter Wing Public Affairs LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- It's time again to highlight the competitiveness and fitness level of Luke Air Force Base members during May Fitness Month at 56th Force Support Squadron Fitness Center. The month of events begins with the annual Luke half-marathon May 5. Sign-ups will begin at 5:30 a.m. and the race begins at 6 a.m. Participants can preregister at the fitness center until May 3. There will be a $10 entry fee and the race counts as a qualifying event for the Air Force Marathon held in September at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. A 3-on-3 sand volleyball tournament will be held May 7 through 10 at the Balfour Beatty Community Center. Letters-of-intent are due to the fitness center by Monday and a coaches' meeting will be held May 3 at the fitness center. There will be a four-hour aerobathon May 12 at the fitness center. Sign-ups will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the workout will start at 9 a.m. "The aerobathon has been a great success in the past and we are excited for this year," said Judy Peterson, 56th FSS fitness specialist. "This is a fun event and we hope to help people improve their fitness level with us during May." There will also be a family 5k fun run at 6:30 a.m. May 12. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers and the top five family finishers. All children who participate will receive a medal. For Luke members who enjoy bowling, Thunderbolt Lanes is featuring a will be a nine pine no tap tournament May 15. The cost is $16 per four-person team and letters-of-intent are due to the fitness center by May 4. The last competition during the month will be powerlifting at 10 a.m. May 18. People interested in participating can sign up before the event at the fitness center or the day of the event from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Awards will be presented at 11 a.m. May 31 at the closing ceremonies in the gym. "May Fitness Month continues to be one of the fitness center's signature events," said Kevin Bruaw, 56th FSS sport specialist. "Our events not only promote fitness for all but give everyone an outlet to be fit. From powerlifters, to volleyball players, hardcore or family runners, our events encompass all forms and ideas of fitness."
