General Stephen Lorenz, Air Education and Training commander, visited Luke Air Force Base facilities and observed first-hand how the base continues to produce the world's greatest F-16 pilots and maintainers Dec. 8 and 9.

"Luke is an impressive base, with an impressive mission, and made up of impressive people," General Lorenz said.

The two-day tour encompassed stops at the 56th Medical Group, 56th Maintenance Group wheel and tire shop, fitness center and a fighter squadron where the general greeted Airmen -- and the Airmen demonstrated just how they contribute to Luke's mission.

"What appeals to me the most are the Airmen -- the people," General Lorenz said. "The things that you all do here are absolutely phenomenal, and professionalism is demonstrated everywhere you go on base."

Thunderbolts were also given the opportunity to ask the AETC commander questions and voice concerns about any upcoming Air Force issues during two commander's calls.

Life is about balance, and Luke has the same issues as the rest of the Air Force, General Lorenz said. It revolves around lack of time, money and manpower.

"In today's economy we are faced with constant challenges and obstacles and all the while trying to improve infrastructure, keep airplanes flying and care for our people," said General Lorenz. "I am confident that through the leadership of everyone on base, we will overcome these obstacles and still continue to produce the best Airmen here at Luke."

This was not the first visit to Luke for the AETC commander, but during this visit, the general was able to see just how Luke's important role plays into supporting the Air Force mission.

"Luke is a shining light in so many ways in accomplishing AETC's goals and in supporting joint force commanders all over the world," General Lorenz said. "Regardless of what aircraft may be flown here in the future, Luke will remain a great base because of the Airmen who train here, the great weather, the ranges and the tremendous support from the local community."

The general concluded his tour at the 56th Fighter Wing with words of praise for all the Airmen before returning to Randolph AFB, Texas.

"All of Team Luke is doing a great job," he said. "You make me proud to be an Airman, and I thank you for serving in the world's greatest air, space and cyberspace force."
