Luke civil engineers have begun demolition work in Fowler Park to make room for a new youth sports baseball field.

The removal of fences, backstops and lights prepares the field for contractors to begin constructing the new field.

According to Mary Jo May, Luke's chief of community relations, the Arizona Diamondbacks approached the base in January and proposed building a field here. The new field, a $300,000 project, comes to Luke as a cooperative effort from several sources.

Summit Builders donates their services, worth approximately $150,000. The remaining $150,000 will come from the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, Arizona Public Service and former Diamondbacks first baseman Mark Grace.

"Fields are dedicated in Diamondbacks players' names," said Ms. May. "They feature new lights, new fencing, new irrigation, authentic Chase Field stadium seats, new grass and a signature 'Diamonds Back' electronic scoreboard."

The goal of the Diamonds Back Youth Field Building Program, a part of the Diamondbacks Foundation, is to provide quality baseball facilities for children across the state. Luke's field will be the 20th field built as part of the program.

The donation for the field is the largest single donation ever to any Air Force Morale, Welfare and Recreation fund, said Lt. Col. Dane Matthew, 56th Services Squadron commander.

"The field will be rotated to put the infield further inside the interior of Fowler Park," Col. Matthew said. "This makes it safer for Luke families by keeping our children farther from the main road."

Officials expect the field to be officially dedicated in mid-September in a ceremony conducted with the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation.
