Businesses from across the region gathered to participate in a job fair hosted by the 56th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center. The event was open to active-duty service members, dependents and retirees Nov. 5 in Club Five Six.

The job fair included more than 60 employers including the Arizona Department of Revenue, the Social Security Administration, Penhall Company, Empire CAT, Lockheed Martin, Walmart Stores Inc., Verizon Wireless, Tucson Police Department, Manpower U-Haul International, Hospice of Arizona and the Arizona Department of Transportation.

"I think it's very important we have a job fair a couple times a year," said Terry Grossman, Arizona Department of Economics Security veteran representative assigned to the A&FRC. "A lot of military members have never had to look for a civilian job, so it's important for them to meet with potential employers one-on-one."

For military members preparing to transition into civilian life, the job fair gave them a new perspective.

"It helped me broaden my scope to include different types of jobs other than what I do in the Air Force," said Tech. Sgt. Desmond Passi, 56th Civil Engineer Squadron water fuels systems maintenance craftsman, who is scheduled to retire in Feb. "It made me realize there are a lot of opportunities I had never thought of doing."

It's important for all military members to prepare for life after the Air Force.

"It's important to be prepared to be a civilian again regardless of if you're planning on being in four years or 20," Passi said. "This was a good chance for me to expand my circle and start networking."

If you're interested in a new job but missed the job fair, it's not too late.

"If someone missed the job fair they can stop by the A&FRC and see what we have," Grossman said. "I'm collecting all the information offered here today to use for future job seekers."
