FSS dominates first V-ball match of season

The first ball of the Luke Air Force Base intramural volleyball season was served and swiftly returned by a volley, setting the tone for the game.

The 56th Force Support Squadron came out on top right in the beginning of the first match against the 56th Logistics Readiness Squadron.

Caitlin Williams, 56th FSS team captain, had a simple strategy going into the game.

"We want to avoid hitting the ball in the direction of the taller members of their team," Williams said. "We just need to score more points than LRS and avoid getting spiked on by their tall team members."

FSS took the victory in the first match with a close final score of 25-22. Going into the second match, LRS made a comeback, putting FSS members on defense. LRS had a distinct advantage of having two team members tall enough to spike. At the end of the second match, LRS had stolen the victory from FSS with a score of 25-15.

Going into the final match, the FSS team knew they needed to turn the tables on LRS.

"The game turned in our favor when Sam Volk began serving," said Michael Imholte, 56th FSS. "She got a rally going between us, which we won. That was the turning point for us to gain enough momentum to come back."

The third match ended with a score of 15-8, FSS taking the first match of the season. "We really need to work on communication," Williams said. "We need to call our defensive zones to avoid letting the ball just hit between two people or having players collide with each other. Overall, I feel our first match went really well, and I foresee more wins in the near future."
