CES whomps EMS 19-13 in football action

LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. --  Since the start of the intramural flag football playoffs, both the 56th Equipment Maintenance Squadron and the 56th Civil Engineer Squadron teams have lost one game in the double elimination tournament. These teams faced off Feb. 13 in a match to stay in the tournament.

CES won the coin toss but chose to kick off. EMS took advantage of this, slowly but steadily driving up the field, making it past the halfway point. After five minutes into the first half, EMS turned the ball over to CES.

CES' quarterback, Cody Timmons, started by running the ball for a 10-yard gain. CES continued to drive back down the field toward their goal but ultimately failed, turning the ball back over.

EMS and CES struggled back and forth for most of the first half until 4:40 was left on the clock. EMS cornerback Jonathan Juarez-Chavez intercepted a pass. He rushed back up the field until he was knocked out of bounds, but CES wasn't going to take this lying down with Jacob Sorby, defensive lineman, intercepting the ball back. CES took advantage of this with a touchdown pass and a 1-point conversion, bringing the score to 7-0 and ending the first half.

CES got the ball at the start of the second half, but EMS snatched it away early on. CES blocked a potential touchdown pass. This resulted in a turnover, which CES again took advantage of throwing a pass to the 10-yard line, which their receiver turned into another touchdown, bringing the score to 13-0.

EMS tried to move the ball back to their goal, but failed, allowing CES to get the ball once again and score another touchdown.

EMS kept their chins up, scoring for the first time with two minutes left to play. After losing the ball, CES kicked it back to EMS who ran the ball 40 yards to score once again bringing the final score to 19-13 and three seconds left on the clock.

"It was our teamwork and communication that allowed us to win this game," said Avis Scott, CES team captain. "Our most valuable player is Cody Timmons, quarterback. He has the ability to make smart plays and to score."

With EMS losing their second game of the playoffs, this ended their run at the championship. However, they were willing to give advice to the other teams playing CES.

"Stay disciplined when you play them," said Rafael Lopez, EMS team captain. "It was a good season, and hopefully EMS will get back on top next season."

CES went on to play the 56th Communications Squadron, who beat them, and will play the 56th Logistics Readiness Squadron in the semifinal game Tuesday. That game will determine who will play the 56th Security Forces Squadron in the finals.
