Public recreation, including overnight camping, is welcomed within the 3 public use areas of the Barry M. Goldwater Range-East in southwest Arizona. Low-impact and leave-no-trace camping is strongly encouraged so that future visitors may enjoy the Sonoran Desert in its natural condition.

The 56th Range Management Office manages the Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field in southwest Arizona. In 2009, RMO/ESM staff used grant funds from the National Public Lands Day foundation to enhance a desert nature trail (the Roar of Freedom Nature Trail) near a campground for military retirees at the auxiliary airfield facility. Volunteers from Gila Bend and the Phoenix area helped add the final touches.
